W. Basketball: Falcons drop OT game to LBCC

Facing host Long Beach City College in their final regular season game, the Cerritos College women's basketball team dropped a 57-55 overtime decision on Wednesday. The Falcons (18-12, 5-3) finish the regular season in second place in the South Coast Conference South Division. The team will find out on Monday where they will be seeded for the upcoming Southern California Regional Playoffs.

With time running out in overtime, freshman Aissha Baldwin (Mayfair HS) pulled down a rebound with :14 seconds left and the Falcons called timeout. Freshman Verenice Gomez (Whittier HS) was fouled with :06 seconds left, but missed both free throws. Cerritos got the ball after the Vikings knocked the ball out of bounds. On the ensuing inbound play, Baldwin was fouled by Darshawna Taafua with :02 seconds left. However, Baldwin missed both free throws and the Falcons end their regular season with consecutive losses.

Trailing 49-46 in the second half, Cerritos held LBCC scoreless the final 2:28, as the missed a pair of shots and turned the ball over once. Sophomore Cassidy Carrillo (St. Paul HS) tied the game when she drained a three-pointer with :44 seconds left in regulation. Long Beach had one final shot, but missed it, sending the game to overtime.

Sophomore Selena Romero (Lakewood HS) led the team with 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Baldwin finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Cerritos struggled at the free throw line, as they converted only 17-of-35 attempts, while Long Beach City made good on 17-of-25 free throws.
