Wrestling: Falcons put away Rio Hondo, 32-20

On Wednesday night, the Cerritos College wrestling team improved to 2-0 in the Southwest Conference after their 32-20 win over host Rio Hondo College. The Falcons (8-1 overall), ranked #2 in the state, will travel to Cuesta College this Saturday for the Meathead Movers Tournament.

Cerritos used four wins by pin, as well as a technical fall to help them in defeated the Roadrunners. After freshman 125-pound Jameer McCrae (Villa Park HS) opened the match with a thrilling 11-10 victory, where he trailed 5-4 heading into the third period, Rio Hondo took a brief 5-3 lead in the team score after two matches.

Freshman 141-pound Anthony Pereyra (Lakeside HS) put the team in front for good after his 19-0 technical fall, which included four first period four-point near falls. A quick pin in the first period from freshman Anthony Gardner (Carson HS) at 149 pounds, was followed by another first period pin at 157 pounds from freshman Cael Garriott (South Torrance HS). The 165-pound match went late into the second period until freshman Mateo Jaramillo (Yorba Linda HS) was leading, 9-2 before ending the match at the 4:20 mark.

The fourth pin in the match for the Falcons came at 184 pounds, as freshman Rafael Guerra (Downey HS) turned a 4-4 match after the first period into a pin with 10 seconds remaining in the second period.
