Over the weekend in the Ben Brown Invitational at Cal State Fullerton, members of the Cerritos College women's track and field team turned in some of the best results in school history. The Falcons will look to improve on those marks next weekend when they travel to the UNLV Invitational.
Although no school records were broken, five times and distances were recorded into the college's all-time Top Five list. The most impressive was by sophomore Juanita Webster (Redlands HS), who posted a personal best time of 13.94 in the 100-meter HH to come in second place on the day. Her time was only bested by Cal State Northridge's Courtney Robinson with a time of 13.82. Also in the race, sophomore Skylin Harbin (Bishop Alemany HS/College of the Canyons) was clocked in 14.58, which put her in ninth place overall. Harbin also put her name on the school's top five list with her time of 1:02.37 in the 400-meter IH, which was good for third place in the meet.
Freshman throwers Amber Hart (Narbonne HS) and Mystasia Alexander (Lynwood HS) also posted exceptional marks for the Falcons. In the javelin, Alexander came in second place in the A group with a distance of 41.92 meters, which is also the fourth best distance in school history. Adding her name to that group was sophomore Crystal Rodriguez (El Rancho HS), who took third place on the day with a throw that traveled 40.65 meters and is the sixth best throw in school history. Rodriguez also won the B group of the discus with a distance of 39.73 meters.
As for Hart, she turned in the fifth best shot put in school history with a toss of 13.55 meters, which put her in fourth place in the A group at the invitational. She also placed fourth in the B group of the hammer with a throw of 35.17 meters. Competing in the B group of the shot put the trio of Rodriguez (11.81 meters), Webster (10.92 meters) and Alexander (10.88 meters) finished in second through fourth places, respectively. Rodriguez also finished in 17th place in the A group of the hammer with a toss of 45.48 meters, while freshman Sela Lotulelei (Paramount HS) checked in with a fourth place distance of 33.09 meters in the B group of the discus.
In the sprints, freshman Kymberlynn Jackson (University Prep HS) won the B group of the 100 meters with a time of 12.48, while sophomore Breanna Curry (University HS) took first place in the 200 meter B group when she was clocked in 25.26. Sophomore Amanda Salgado (El Rancho HS) also gave Cerritos a fourth place in the B group of the 400 meters when she turned in a time of 1:01.29.
Freshman Jelani Minix (Carson HS) triple jumped 10.39 meters for a third place finish in the B group, while freshman Amani Briggs (Lakewood HS) earned a third place in the B group of the high jump when she cleared 1.55 meters. In the long jump, Curry competed in the A group and turned in a seventh place distance of 5.33 meters, with sophomore Symone Addo (La Serna HS) taking eighth place in the B group with a long jump of 4.81 meters.
Occidental Invitational: With just a small handful of athletes competing at the Occidental Invitational, the best result for Cerritos came from freshman Rebecca Harris (Buena Park HS), who finished 10th out of 58 entries in the 800 meters with a time of 2:19.54.
