Looking to win their fourth consecutive Southern California Championship, the Cerritos College women's track and field team is leading after the prelims, which took place at San Diego Mesa College on Saturday. SoCal champions five times in the last six years, as well, the Falcons have compiled 84 team points and leads second place Mt. San Antonio College by 52 points. The Southern California Championships will also be held at San Diego Mesa next Saturday.

Other members of the team have already advanced to the SoCal Finals based on marks turned in earlier in the season. Several of the events were finals, with Cerritos continuing their dominance of the field events. Sophomore Mystasia Alexander (Lynwood HS), the defending CCCAA State Champion in the javelin, won her second straight Southern California title with her first place distance of 42.99 meters, which easily outdistance second place teammate Michaela Banyi (Valencia HS).

Sophomore thrower Amber Hart (Narbonne HS) took second place in the hammer with a distance of 49.09 meters, while freshman Tanya Reyes (Warren HS) took third place with a throw of 47.90 meters. The Falcons also compiled 29 of their team points by finishing in the top four places of the heptathlon, which took place last month. Banyi won the event with 4567 points.

Other outstanding marks were turned in during the prelims. In the 100 meters, freshman Keirra King (Long Beach Wilson HS) posted the third best time with a clocking of 11.62 to win the event. Also, in the long jump, her leap of 6.06 meters put her in first place, while it also placed her name third on the college's all-time top five list. Hart, who is also the defending state champion in the shot put, came in first place with a throw of 14.33 meters, which is the second best mark in school history.
