M. Water Polo: Cerritos wins both games at Citrus Tournament

After splitting their two games at the Golden West Tournament on Friday, the Cerritos College men's water polo team picked up a pair of wins at the Citrus Tournament Saturday. The Falcons improved to 9-3 on the year with a 17-5 win over Cal Tech and then followed that with a 21-10 victory over the host Owls. The team will now open South Coast Conference play at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday when they travel to Los Angeles Trade-Tech College.

In the opening day win over Cal Tech, 10 different players scored, led by freshman TJ Tigerina (Bell Gardens HS), who accounted for three goals, two assists and two steals, while the quartet of Daric Johnson (Whittier HS), Christian Flores (Montebello HS), Miguel Garcia (Montebello HS) and Joshua Owens (Kennedy HS) each added a pair of goals. Freshman goalkeeper Coleton Perez (Western HS) recorded 13 saves and made three steals on defense. Four players had two steals, while three has two assists.

In the second game against Citrus, Cerritos come out strong going up 7-3 in the first quarter, but the Owls closed the gap in the second quarter, as they went into halftime trailing just 11-8. The Falcons turned up the defense in the second half though, giving up just two goals and cruised to a 21-10 victory. Flores found the back of the net five times and distributed four assists, while sophomore Rafael Romero (Montebello HS) added four goals, three assists and three steals, while Tigerina (three steals) and Castro chipped in with three each. Perez had another solid game with five saves, while Johnson played a quarter in goal and had three saves and a steal.
