W. Tennis: Conference awards announced

After reaching the semifinals of the CCCAA State Championships in singles play, Cerritos College sophomore Samantha Judan (Bishop Montgomery HS) was named 1st Team All-South Coast Conference. Judan, who finished the year with a 16-8 singles record, reached the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. The Falcons #1 singles player also earned 1st Team all-conference recognition in doubles and teamed with sophomore Rianne Ilagan (Bellflower HS) to reach to conference championship match. The two also reached the state's Round of 16.

Earning 2nd Team honors was freshman Stef Flores (Golden Valley Charter HS), the Falcons #2 singles player. She also teamed with sophomore Natali Perez (Lakewood HS) for 2nd Team honors in doubles play. Flores was 11-13 in singles play and advanced to the state championships, while she and Perez went 7-2 as a pair. Flores lost in the quarterfinals in singles, while the doubles team was defeated by Judan and Perez in the semifinals of doubles play. They also lost in the Round of 32 at the state championships.

On the coaching side, assistant coach Jony Chai was named the conference's Assistant Coach of the Year. Also the recipient of the ITA Assistant Coach of the Year Award, Chai helped lead the Falcons to within a game of second place in the talented South Coast Conference.
