Showing their depth in the multi-events, the Cerritos College women's track and field took nine of the top 10 spots at the Cerritos Open over the weekend. The Falcons, who won four of the events at the invitational, secured the top four positions in the heptathlon and then five of the next six, as they dominated with some outstanding marks. Cerritos will now compete in the Cal State Los Angeles Invitational next Friday and Saturday, with the throwing events happening at Falcon Stadium on Friday.
Leading the way in the multi-events was defending CCCAA State Champion Juanita Webster (Redlands HS), who recorded 4999 points, while sophomore Breanna Curry (University HS) was in second place with 4565 points. Also amassing over 4000 points were sophomore Brandy Navarro (Montebello HS), with 4157 points, while freshman Michaela Banyi (Valencia HS) had 4060 points.
Two-time event winner, sophomore sprinter Meka Story (Gahr HS) win both the 100 meters (12.50) and 200 meters (25.89), while sophomore Kassandra Herrera (El Rancho HS) posted a first place time of 1:09.69 in the 400-meter IH. Cerritos also recorded five second place finishes on the day.
The team garnered success in the throwing events, with freshman Amber Hart (Narbonne HS) placing second in the shot put at 12.38 meters and fourth in the hammer with a distance of 34.15 meters. Sophomore Crystal Rodriguez (El Rancho HS) came in second place in the hammer at 42.83 meters, with freshman Ailinisilose Williams (Paramount HS) coming in second in the discus (40.84 meters) and third in the shot put at 12.07 meters.
Freshman Mystasia Alexander (Lynwood HS) recorded the fourth best javelin throw in school history, as she took second place with a distance of 40.85 meters, while finished third in the discus (38.23 meters), with freshman Alejandra Guzman (Long Beach Wilson HS) placing third at 31.45 meters. Triple jumper Jelani Minix (Carson HS) was third with a distance of 10.64, while her time of 16.11 in the 100-meter HH put her in third place. Sophomore Symone Addo (La Serna HS) turned in a long jump of 4.80 meters, good for fourth place.
In the distance races, sophomore Adriana Velasco (Downey HS) posted a time of 5:01.56 to come in fifth place in the 1500 meters, and came back for a second place time of 11:03.32 in the 3000 meters. Freshman Rebecca Harris (Buena Park HS) earned third place in the 800 meters (2:22.69), while Amanda Salgado (El Rancho HS) posted a time of 1:02.46 to come in fourth place in the 400 meters.
