W. Cross Country: Grouping helps Cerritos win Mt. SAC Invitational

With only :12 seconds separating their first and fifth runner, the Cerritos College women's cross country team easily outdistanced their competition as they won the Mt. San Antonio Invitational on Friday. The Falcons, who paired with the men's team to earn a pair of first place finishes and earned the Sweepstakes Award for the best combined times. That combined time of 3:21.34 also set a new course record. The 52 team points by Cerritos, ranked #4 in the state, was well ahead of the host Mounties, who came in second place with 101 team points on the day. The teams will take a week off before they run in the South Coast Conference Championships, which will take place on October 26 at be hosted by Los Angeles Trade-Tech College.

Although she was :32 seconds behind the overall winner, sophomore Karina Sanchez (Warren HS/ECC Compton Center) completed the three-mile course in a time of 18:52 to come in seventh place overall, while freshman teammate Isabel Medina (Paramount HS) was just one second behind to come in eighth place out of the 200 runners.

Joining that pack of runners was sophomore Julia Plecnik (St. Joseph HS), who handled the very hilly course in a time of 18:58 to place 10th, while the duo of freshmen Kathia Avila (Cerritos HS) and Kaela Crone (Kennedy HS) completed the team's top five runners. Avila took 14th place in 19:03, while the time of 19:04 turned in by Crone was good for 15th place.

Also competing for the Falcons on the day were freshman Patsy Hurley (Mark Keppel HS), who came in 27th place in a time of 19:28, while sophomore Maira Solis (Roosevelt HS/Occidental College) was close behind and took 29th place in 19:32. As for freshman Natalie Lenarduzzi (Marshall HS), her time of 20:02 put her in 44th place overall, with freshman Angelyca Osnaya-Tyson (Long Beach Poly HS) came in 58th place in 20:34, while freshman Sara Gonzalez (El Rancho HS) was the 70th runner with a time of 20:57.
