After spending the 2013 season as a volunteer assistant, Jony
Chai is in his first year as the team’s top assistant coach.
Back in 2011, Chai was a member of the Falcon men’s team and
teamed with Derek Siddiqui to win the Southern California
championship and reached the state championship match before
suffering a defeat. The duo posted a 23-3 record together, while
Chai was also 13-5 in singles play as the team’s #2 player.
Prior to coming to Cerritos as a player, Chai played his freshman
year in 2009 at UC Riverside, where he went 3-3 in singles and 8-8
in doubles play. He had already graduated with a degree in Business
Administration.
Chai prepped at Cerritos High, where he was four straight Suburban
League singles championships and was voted his team’s Most
Valuable Player each year. The team won the league title each
season, with Chai advancing to the CIF Round of 16 as a junior.
Academically, Chai was a Scholar-Athlete as a junior and was a
member of the Honor Roll.
Chai, 26, has been teaching tennis since he was 18 years old and
taught at both Cerritos High and McPherson (KS) College.
