Softball: Final regular season game ends in win

Playing their final regular season game of the year, the Cerritos College softball team posted a 12-2, 5-inning win over host Grossmont College on Wednesday. The win over the Griffins (8-27) gives the Falcons (20-19) their 13th straight 20-win season. They will find out this weekend of they have qualified as one of the 18 teams for the Southern California Regional Playoffs, which would also be their 13th consecutive year playing in the postseason.

In the win over Grossmont, Cerritos scored in each of the five innings, including the first eight runs of the game. In the top of the first inning, sophomore shortstop Tena Spoolstra (Mayfair HS) singled, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After freshman outfielder Haley Davis (Mayfair HS) drew a walk, she stole second base, with both coming home on a base hit from freshman outfielder Itzel Soto (Long Beach Millikan HS).

Spoolstra, who went 4-for-4 on the day with four runs scored, also stole five bases to take over the state lead with 41 swipes. Her total also ranks her third in a season in school history. She played a role in the team scoring three times in the second inning, as her single loaded the bases with no outs. Davis and Soto each brought in runs with sacrifice flies, with sophomore catcher Deja Sendejas (El Rancho HS) driving in the third run with a base hit.

Sophomore first baseman Keira Bolinas (Torrance HS) drove in a pair of runs in the third inning with a single, while freshman second baseman Erica Martinez (Kennedy HS) plated a run in the fourth inning with a single. The game became eligible for eight-run mercy rule after the Falcons scored four times in the fifth inning. Bolinas and Sendejas added to their RBI totals, with sophomores Nicoal Magdaleno (La Habra HS) and Melissa Corona (Gahr HS) also driving in runs.

Sierra Gerdts (Montebello HS) won her ninth game of the season with a complete game effort, as she allowed two runs on seven hits.
