Cerritos College sophomore Sydney Carr (El Modena HS/UC Irvine) recorded a 10-point game in the team's 7-0 non-conference win over host College of the Canyons on Friday night. The win by the nation's top-ranked Falcons (6-0-0) was their final non-conference game, as the team will open South Coast Conference South Division play Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Los Angeles Harbor College.
The four-goal, two-assist output by Carr moves her into a tie for fourth place in the state with 25 points, while her eight goals (tied for eighth) and seven assists (tied four fourth) put her in the top ten in the state in both categories.
Carr assisted on the first goal of the game, just 1:12 into the match when she took a shot on goal that was deflected to sophomore Serena Camacho (Los Osos HS/UC Irvine), who tapped the ball into the goal. It was a bad clearing attempt by the Cougars (2-6-0) in the 17th minute that resulted in her first of four tallies. The poorly headed ball was scooped up by Carr, who went in alone against Canyons goalkeeper Ana Spross and made it a 2-0 affair.
Cerritos scored their next four goals in the span of six minutes to take a 6-0 lead into halftime. Carr, who was around the ball all night, got the third goal started when she moved the ball deep into Canyons territory, where she found sophomore Mia Ramirez (Torrance HS) and she finished off the play with a goal. After Camacho scored in the 28th minute, Carr put two in the net within a span of 1:36 and then capped off the scoring in the 87th minute when her fourth of the game.
As a team, the Falcons put 15 shots on goal, while sophomore goalkeeper Deisy Rodriguez (Katella HS) turned away five Cougars shots. It was her fifth shutout of the season and third in a row. On the year, Cerritos has allowed just one goal, with Rodriguez maintaining a 0.00 goals against average.
