Concluding their busiest week of the season, the Cerritos College volleyball team split their four matches at the San Diego City Tournament on Saturday. The Falcons (7-6) posted wins in their first two matches and then suffered straight set losses to Pima (AZ) College in pool play and then in the playoff round. On Friday, the team will open South Coast Conference play at 6:00 p.m. when they host Long Beach City College (2-7).
Cerritos vs. Cuyamaca: The team opened with a 25-15, 25-21, 25-16 win with freshman Monica Vega (South Gate HS) posting 10 kills with just one error, while sophomore Nicole Spigner (La Mirada HS) added eight kills. Freshman middle blocker Kayley Stephens (Cypress HS) accounted for seven kills without an error, while she also posted a pair of blocks. Sophomore setter Natalie Caravantes (Baldwin Park HS) directed the offense with 30 assists, while freshman Rocio Rojo-Perez (Bellflower HS) delivered a season-high four service aces.
Cerritos vs. Cuesta: The tandem of Spigner and Vega each accounted for 11 kills, as the Falcons recorded a 25-20, 12-25, 25-22, 25-22 win over the Cougars. Caravantes had her second straight 30-assist match, while Stephens posted nine kills and two blocks. Defensively, sophomore Jasmine Peralta (Lakewood HS) led the team with 18 digs and contributed four kills offensively, while sophomore Valerie Montoya (La Mirada HS) produced six kills and 11 digs.
Cerritos vs. Pima (AZ): In their first meeting with the Aztecs, which was a 21-25, 18-25, 14-25 setback, seven different players recorded at least one kill. However, the team didn't have an answer for Jamie Holliday, who led all players with 13 kills, while the team posted 68 digs against the Falcons. Cerritos wasn't able to put their kill attempts away, as Angel Chavez came up with 23 digs for Pima. Spigner (seven kills, 11 digs) led the way, while Caravantes contributed four kills with her 18 assists. Stephens also had four kills in the loss.
Cerritos vs. Pima (AZ): In their playoff match, the Aztecs finished off the Falcons in three sets, 22-25, 19-25, 21-25, with Holliday (12 kills, 21 digs) once again controlling the match. Spigner had a magnificent three sets, as she led the way with 15 kills and had seven digs. But Cerritos just couldn't get past the net presence of Pina, who had 10 solo blocks and 12 block assists.
