After a sweep of rival Long Beach City College on Wednesday, the table has been set for the Cerritos College volleyball team for their next match. The Falcons (13-8, 6-2) sit in third place in the South Coast Conference and will host second place Mt. San Antonio College (12-4, 7-1) at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. A win would put the team in a tie for second place, while a loss would drop them into third place by two games with five matches remaining.

Cerritos handled the Vikings (4-14, 2-6) in a little over an hour, 25-19, 25-15, 25-13, and hit a respectable 25.5% to go along with 16 service aces. They trailed in the first set, 12-11 and 10-8 in the second set, but were dominant the remainder of the match.

Leading 17-15 in the first set, freshman Kayley Stephens (Cypress HS) picked up a kill followed by a service ace from sophomore Valerie Montoya (La Mirada HS) and an attack error by LBCC to open up a 20-15 advantage. Then, with the match at 21-19, sophomore Nicole Spigner (La Mirada HS) drove home a kill and freshman Rocio Rojo-Perez (Bellflower HS) got the team closer to a win with a service ace. Spigner finished off the first set with a kill.

Mounting a comeback in the second set, kills by freshman Monica Vega (South Gate HS) and Montoya, along with a service ace from sophomore Jasmine Peralta (Lakewood HS) were followed by an attack error to give the team a 12-10 lead they would not relinquish. A 12-11 match turned into a 22-11 lead when the Falcons strung together 11 straight points. Montoya served three straight aces - and four during the run- while Stephens had a pair of kills. They finished off the set when the Vikings recorded an attack error.

The momentum from the second set carried over into the third set, as Cerritos scored the first six points and led 21-8 before finishing off LBCC, 25-13. Rojo-Perez served three aces in the set, while Peralta added a pair, with Vega recording four kills.

On the night, Vega led the team with 10 kills, while Montoya added seven kills and seven service aces. Stephens drove home nine kills, with Spigner posting six in the win with six digs. Sophomore setter Natalie Caravantes (Baldwin Park HS) directed the offense with 32 assists, with seven digs and three kills, while Peralta finished with 18 digs, five assists and three aces. Rojo-Perez contributed four aces, while freshman Cristina Kennedy (Cabrillo HS) added six digs.
