Football: Falcons have 19 players named All-Conference

After a season where the Cerritos College football team went 4-6 on the year and missed out on a post-season bowl game, the team had 19 players named All-Northern Division. Of those that were selected, sophomore linebacker Alex Bush (La Habra HS) was named the Defensive Player of the Year, while sophomore running back Kishawn Holmes (Vista Murrieta HS) was a unanimous 1st Team choice.

Joining Holmes on the 1st Team Offense was sophomore offensive lineman Anthony Cerrillo (La Mirada HS), while the trio of freshmen defensive tackle PJ Naufahu (El Camino HS), sophomore strong safety Elijah Walker (Cabrillo HS) and sophomore cornerback Brandon Ezell (Los Alamitos HS) were named 1st Team Defense.

Bush led all of Southern California with 106 tackles, while tying for third in the state. Of those tackles, 40 of them were solo stops, including the game-winning tackle at the two-yard line to defeat College of the Canyons. He also posted 9 1/2 tackles for loss, four quarterback sacks, led the state with four forced fumbles and recovered two fumbles. As for Naufahu, he recorded 29 stops, along with two quarterback sacks, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Walker missed the final game due to an injury but still finished second on the team with 53 tackles with 3 1/2 tackles for loss, three pass breakups and an interception. Leading the team with three interceptions for 73 return yards, Ezell had 30 tackles on the year, three pass breakups and also blocked an extra point.

Kishawn Holmes was a unanimous 1st Team selection Holmes (pictured, left) led the state in rushing with 1,120 yards to go along with 11 touchdowns and averaged 5.5 yards per rush. He ran for over 100 yards six times on the year, including the last four games with a career-high 185 yards and three touchdowns against Moorpark College. Holmes didn't score his first touchown until the sixth game of the year and still tied for fifth in the state with 11 scores. His single-season total is the fifth best in school history, while his 2,088 career rushing yards are the second most in school history and trail only Andre Wooten, who amassed 2,307 from 1986-87.

Cerrillo, along with 2nd Team selections Daniel Alanouf (Los Alamitos HS), Jason Sitala (Bellflower HS) and Eric Golston (St. John Bosco HS) helped Holmes reach his rushing total with their blocking, which resulted in 197 yards a game on the ground. for the Falcons. Sophomore tight end Elijah Rogers (East Jefferson, LA HS), who is a superb blocker, was named to the 2nd Team for the second year in a row after pulling in 15 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns. Freshmen wide receivers Jacob Gasser (Los Alamitos HS) and Stacy Chukwumezie (Downey HS) were the team's top receivers, with Gasser catching 25 passes for 363 yards. Chukwumezie used his superb speed to average 18.7 yards per catch after pulling in 24 passes for 448 yards and two touchdowns, including a 94-yarder against Golden West College.

Handling the passing duties on the year was sophomore Nick Mitchell (Mount Si, WA HS/Oregon State University), who received 2nd Team accolades. He completed 123-of-217 passes for 1,529 yards and 10 touchdowns, and was third on the team with 325 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Automatic with his leg, sophomore kicker Adrian Saldana (Walnut HS) converted all 29 extra points and was 2-of-4 on field goals for the season.

Earning 2nd Team honors on defense were defensive ends John Collins (Long Beach Poly HS) and Siupeli Finau (Dominguez HS), sophomore linebacker Daniel Moore (Long Beach Wilson HS), sophomore safety Tyler Rios (Lakewood HS) and freshman cornerback Darien Cornay (Los Alamitos HS). Finau (36 tackles) and Collins (35 tackles) had virtually identical stats, which included Finau posting four sacks (Collins had 3 1/2), while Collins finished with 7 1/2 tackles for loss, with Finau recording 6 1/2. Rios third on the team with 39 tackles, which included four pass breakups, one interception and one blocked kick, while Moore was injured most of the season but still registered 19 tackles, four tackles for loss, one fumble recovery and a pass breakup. Cornay led the secondary with eight pass breakups to go along with his 31 tackles (21 solo), one fumble recovery and interception.
