On the strength of their 14-3 win over visiting El Camino College on Monday, the Cerritos College men's water polo team remained in a three-way tie for first place in the South Coast Conference. The Falcons (14-1), winners of 10 matches in a row, are tied for first place with Mt. San Antonio College (12-2, 3-0) and Long Beach City College (7-2, 3-0). They will host the Mounties next Wednesday at 4:15 p.m. in a crucial match.

In the victory over the Warriors (3-12, 1-3), Cerritos held a 5-1 advantage after the first period and then were on top, 7-2 heading into intermission. They outscored El Camino, 5-0 in the third period to put the game out of reach.

Leading 3-1 in the first period, sophomores Jesus Rojas (Colegio Fray Luis Amigo, Venezuela) and Israel Rodriguez (Whittier HS) scored in the final minute to give the team their 5-1 advantage. Rojas scored with :55 seconds left, while Rodriguez scored his lone goal of the game with :05 seconds remaining.

Freshman Preston Medina (Downey HS) converted a 5-meter shot early in the second period for a 6-1 advantage, until freshman Jonathan Butz (Los Altos HS) added another goal with 5:00 left before halftime, which would turn out to be the final goal of the period.

In the third period, freshman Salvador Orozco (Montebello HS) scored both of his goals and was one of four Falcons to score twice on the day. He was joined by Rojas, Butz and freshman Bryan Santis (La Serna HS), with freshman goalie Matthew Contreras (Montebello HS) leding the team with three second half goals. He finished with seven saves in two periods of action.
