Wrestling: Falcons pick up pair of wins at duals

On Saturday, the Cerritos College wrestling team traveled north to Simpson University in Redding to take on colleges from Oregon and Washington. The Falcons split their four matches, as they earned wins over Highline (WA) CC (29-22) and Southwest Oregon CC (26-23), while they suffered losses to Southern Oregon University (27-14) and Clakamas (OR) CC (29-7). This Saturday, the team will compete in the East Los Angeles Brawl, their final event before the Southern California Regional Tournament.

Cerritos vs. Southern Oregon University: Taking on the NAIA national runner-up, the Falcons earned a pair of technical falls to account for their team scoring. At 133 pounds, freshman Anthony Vargas (Citrus Hill HS) posted a 21-3 victory, which included three near falls in the first period and a four-point near fall in the second period that ended the match. Sophomore 285-pound Jesse Gomez (Buena Park HS) went into the third period, but it was a four-point near-fall that secured the victory. Freshman Aaron Negrete (Calvary Chapel HS) also added a 13-4 win at 157 pounds. Cerritos dropped three one-point decisions, with freshman Richard Pocock (California HS) suffering a 3-2 setback at 141 pounds. He surrendered a third period takedown and then escaped to get to within one point, but couldn't come up with a takedown to win the match. Leading 2-1 in the second period, freshman165-pounds Jacob Collins (Calvary Chapel HS) was penalized one point for stalling, which turned out to be the difference in a 3-2 loss. At 197 pounds, sophomore Oscar Martinez (Corona Centennial HS) led 3-2 at the start of the third period, and allowed an escape and was taken down for a 5-3 deficit. He escaped for a point, but ran out of time.

Cerritos vs. Highline (WA) CC: Leading by just one point heading into the final match, the Falcons received a first period pin by Gomez to clinch the team victory. They could have earned the win at 197 pounds, but Martinez was penalized a point in the third period for stalling and suffered a 2-1 setback. Pins by both Negrete and 157 pounds and by freshman Joel Villa (Citrus Hill HS) at 174 pounds gave the team a 23-14 lead. Sophomore Estevan Cabanas (Canyon Springs HS) earned a technical fall 16-1 win at 133 pounds, as did freshman Benjamin Gonzalez (Loara HS) with his 18-2 victory at 149 pounds.

Cerritos vs. Clackamas (OR) CC: Facing the defending NJCAA National Champions, the Falcons absorbed a couple of close losses, but where pinned once and gave up a major decision along the way. Negrete continued his winning ways with a 12-2 victory at 157 pounds and nearly posted a pin late in the match. The team's other win came from Martinez, who was in another close match, as he recorded a 2-1 win at 197 pounds. Both he and John Morin was warned for stalling in the first period. Morin was called once again in the third period, which turned out to be the difference in the match. At 141 pounds, Pocock allowed a takedown in the first and second periods, and although he was able to escape, couldn't generate any points in the third period in a 4-2 loss.

Cerritos vs. Southwestern Oregon CC: With the match tied at 17-17 after seven matches, the Falcons needed to dig themselves out of a hole after they suffered a pin at 184 pounds. Martinez started the comeback with a 4-1 win at 197 pounds, while Gomez capped off the win with a first period pin at 185 pounds. Cerritos trailed, 6-0 after the first two weights, but picked up a technical fall by sophomore Voris Meeks (Yucca Valley HS), who recorded a 17-2 win in just a little over one period. He had three four-point near falls in the first period and finished of his opponent with a takedown in the second period. Gonzalez followed with a first period pin at 149 pounds, with Negrete capping off a 4-0 day with a pin at 157 pounds.
