Playing old-school Cerritos College football, the Falcons racked up 541 yards in a 37-6 win over host Palomar College on Saturday night in a game that was held at Escondido High School. In their first two games, the team combined for just 355 yards on offense. Mixing a power running game with a wide open passing attack, Cerritos (1-2) scored touchdowns on big plays, as well as sustained drives in handing the Comets (2-1) their first loss of the season. Cerritos will look to build on their win when they host Golden West College in a 7:00 p.m. game next Saturday at Falcon Stadium.

Leading 13-6 heading into the second half, the Falcons took the first drive and made an impact, as sophomore wide receiver Stacy Chukwumezie (Downey HS) collected a short pass and used both speed and power to score from 58 yards out. On the play, he crossed the field and in doing so, broke up to six tackles and muscled his way into the end zone to give Cerritos a lead they would be able to build upon. The Falcons regained possession less than two minutes later and backed themselves up to their five-yard line after a pair of penalties.

But faced with a 1st-and-25, freshman Quentin Davis (St. John Bosco HS) hit Chukwumezie along the sideline and he outran the Palomar defense for a school-record 95-yard touchdown play. It broke the old record of 93 yards from Chris Morales to Michael Willie against Riverside City College in 2009. Davis finished the night 10-for-17 for 234 yards and three touchdowns. His early-game receiver, sophomore Justin Garrett (Gahr HS/West Los Angeles College), finished with seven catches for 65 yards and a 37-yard touchdown to get the team on the board in the first quarter.

The ground game produced 292 yards, with four running backs rotating to provide fresh legs on the night. Each of them carried the ball just eight times, but sophomore Querale Hall (Mayfair HS) amassed 96 yards and a two-yard touchdown, with freshman Rhamondre Stevenson (Centennial, NV HS) finishing with 76 yards and a three-yard touchdown run. Adding to their total were sophomores Vincent Brown (Artesia HS) and Roderick Ashford, Jr. (St. Anthony HS/Long Beach City), who posted 49 and 45 yards, respectively. They were able to collect their yards due to the blocking of linemen Chris Faaumu (Emerald Ridge, WA HS), Fealofani Afemata (Mayfair HS), David Zavala (Lakewood HS/University of Nevada), Joshua Lopez (Warren HS) and Justin Gonzalez (La Mirada HS).

On the defensive side of the ball, the Falcons did not allow the Comets to convert any third down situations and limited them to 71 yards on the ground. It was a full team effort, with no player recording more than five tackles. Both Stanley Norman (Serra HS) and Robert Corner (Buena Park HS) picked off passes to end offensive threats, with the secondary finishing with 22 solo tackles as a unit. Alexander Fulmer (Bakersfield HS) and Josh Caldwell (La Mirada HS) both had five solo tackles from their cornerback positions, with freshman linebacker Latrell Stearns (Gahr HS) contributing five stops.
