In their South Coast Conference opener on Friday, the Cerritos College men's soccer team scored five times in the second half for a 5-1 win over host ECC Compton Center. The win extends the Falcons (4-2-3) unbeaten streak to four games (2-0-2) and the team will host Long Beach City College at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
Trailing 1-0 at intermission, Cerritos was able to open their game up offensively and it payed dividends, as they caught the Tartars off guard. The result was three goals in an eight-minute span that gave the team some breathing room and allowed them to execute offensively.
They tied the game in the 57th minute when sophomore Austin De Medeiros (Gahr HS) blasted a shot that found its way into the net. He took the pass from freshman Oscar Canela (Paramount HS) and then the two worked together on the team's second goal. De Medeiros worked the ball on the outside edge and found Canela, who carried the ball with pace and sent a shot into the upper corner of the net to give the Falcons a lead they would not relinquish.
The third goal came on a long set piece with sophomore Ivan Vazquez (Fullerton HS) sending a beautiful ball to freshman Guy Julien (National Haitian Student Alliance), who completed the play with a tip-in goal. Once Cerritos took control of the tempo, they maintained possession of the ball for the majority of the second half and added two more goals for their second largest output of the season.
In the 77th minute, sophomore Carlos Escobedo (South Gate HS) tacked on the team's fourth goal on a pass from freshman Adrian Becerra (Morningside HS), who played a role in the fifth goal. He played the ball through the middle and sent a pass to Marc Calderon (Elizabeth Learning Center HS), who finished the play for his first goal of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ivan Martin Del Campo (Granada Hills Kennedy HS) posted five saves in the win.
