Although they were to top two seeds for the South Coast Conference Tournament, the Cerritos College and El Camino College men's soccer teams were playing in the third place game on Friday. After a tight first half, where the state's top-ranked Warriors were leading, 1-0, the team combined for six goals in the second half, with the #6-ranked Falcons coming away with a 4-3 victory. The win extends the team's unbeaten streak to 17 games (12-0-5), as they handed El Camino (14-2-4) just their second loss of the season. Cerritos will find out on Monday where they are seeded for the upcoming Southern California Regional Playoffs, and are expected to receive a first round bye. Currently, the top three teams in Southern California come from the SCC South Division, which includes Cerritos, El Camino and Long Beach City.
"What a great win for our program," exclaimed head coach Benny Artiaga. "We finished on a 17-game unbeaten streak. I'm proud of our guys for an amazing season and now the real fun starts."
In the win over the Warriors, sophomore Erick Velasco (Norwalk HS) was the team's scoring hero, as he accounted for two goals in the span of eight minutes, with the second turning out to be the game-winning goal. With the game knotted at 2-2, freshman Daniel Vazquez (Perry Academy (GA) HS) fed Velasco, who fired a shot past Warriors goalkeeper Robert Baker for his third goal of the season.
Less than a minute after receiving a yellow card, Velasco scored what would be the game-winning goal in the 88th minute to make it a 4-2 lead. El Camino did score in extra time to make the game close, but Cerritos would hold on for the win.
The Warriors got on the board in the second minute of the game to take an early lead. But the Falcons defense limited them to just two more shots on goal in the half, with freshman goalkeeper Griffin Welch (Long Beach Poly HS) coming up with both saves. He would go on to make three on the day.
Sophomore Donovan Perez (South East HS) tied the game in the 53rd minute after a nice feed from freshman Cesar Solarzano Garcia (California Pacific Charter HS), while freshman Pedro Reyes (Connections Academy HS/Cal State Fullerton) came back less than four minutes later for a 3-1 Falcons lead, with Perez getting the assist.
