The California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) will be welcoming six new members into their Hall of Fame on March 26 and one of those inductees will be former Cerritos College men's soccer player Marcelo Balboa. He joined the Cerritos College men's soccer team, where he was a two-time 1st Team All-South Coast Conference selection from 1986-87 and also found time to serve as a placekicker on the Falcons football team. After his two years with Cerritos, he moved on to San Diego State University, where he was a two-time All-American selection and led them to the NCAA tournament both years.
In 2013, Balboa (pictured, left with the Colorado Rapids) was inducted into the Cerritos College Hall of Fame.
During his days with the Aztecs, he was already making a name for himself nationally and soon, internationally. By early 1988, he earned his first cap playing for the US National Team and went on to earn a record 128 caps over his career. Balboa was the most consistent defender for the men's U.S. National Team throughout the 1990's earning his 128 caps and as a result of his durability and reliability on defense, was dubbed by the American press in 1994 as the "Iron Man". He also showed his offensive ability, scoring an amazing 13 goals. He was also one of the first three players in the history of the U.S. Men's National Team to appear in three World Cups (1990, 1994, 1998) and is recognized mostly for his near-miss bicycle kick in the 1994 FIFA World Cup against Columbia.
Considered one of the 'founding fathers' of the US Soccer program, Balboa served was a member of the US National Team from 1988-2000 and was part of Major League Soccer from its inception. He was a first-ballot inductee into the MLS Hall of Fame in 2005 and has served as an ESPN and ABC Sports broadcaster. Balboa was also named the US Soccer Athlete of the Year twice and Balboa is now an Apple/MLS Spanish analyst, Rapids social media,TUDN Analyst, and was hired as a Community Ambassador for the Colorado Rapids.
The Hall of Fame dinner will be hosted at the Sheraton Grand in Sacramento on March 26 and begins at 6:00 p.m. Cocktail hour begins at 5:00 p.m.
