Competing in their first tournament of the season, the Cerritos College men's water polo team picked up three wins in four games at the West Valley Tournament over the weekend. The Falcons opened with wins over Merced College (20-4) and Diablo Valley College (18-7) on Friday and followed that with a 20-5 setback against the host Vikings before capping off Saturday with a 15-7 win over Modesto Junior College. Cerritos (3-1) will take part in the Golden West Tournament next weekend and will play a pair of games on Friday and Saturday.
In what has been the norm for the Falcons for many years, the team received goals from 11 different players. Cerritos has always looked to balance their offensive attack and were led by sophomore Tim Robles (Schurr HS), who had four goals and added six steals. The duo of Martin Gonzalez (Western HS/Cypress College) and Jacob Colon (Schurr HS) each added three goals, as the Falcons jumped out to a 10-1 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. They also rotated a trio of goalkeepers, who combined to make 11 saves, with freshman Aiden Parra (California HS) also finishing with five steals.
The offensive attack continued against Diablo Valley, with Cerritos scoring multiple goals in a row in each of the four quarters to open up their comfortable lead. Robles scored six goals and added four steals, with Colon producing four goals and assisted on four more. A trio of players scored three times, with Guillermo De La Mora (La Serna HS) also posting a pair of assists. The goalkeeping rotation continued, with Diego Campos (Downey HS) turning away seven shots to earn his second win of the day.
Taking on the top team in Northern California to start their Saturday, the Falcons struggled to get their offense going and found themselves down, 9-1 early in the second half. Five different players scored goals for Cerritos, with Campos making eight saves.
The weekend capped off with an 8-2 scoring advantage in the second half against the Pirates allowing Cerritos to break open a close 7-5 game. Robles led the way with four goals and six steals, with Declan Nelson (Corona HS) and Roman Ramos (Schurr HS) both adding a pair of goals. De La Mora finished with four assists in the win.
