Place Winners
In one of the most competitive tournaments of the season, the Cerritos College wrestling team had 11 place winners at the Bill Musick Tournament in Fresno in Saturday. The team didn't have any first place finishers, but had a pair of wrestlers reach the championship match. In addition, the Falcons had one place third and three come in fourth place. This Wednesday, Cerritos will travel to Mt. San Antonio College for a Southwest Conference match with the conference championship on the line.
One of the bigger surprises of the day came at 197 pounds, where sophomore David Van Weems (Corona Centennial HS) lost his first collegiate match. After wins in his first three matches on the day, he was defeated by Elder Cruz, 16-4, who was an unattached wrestler, but competed at Mt. San Antonio College in 2012. Van Weems recorded a pin over Tristan Begovic of Shasta College in 6:01 of his first match and followed with a 14-3 win over Kristopher Kranich of Simpson (CA) College and a 10-6 victory in the semifinals over Rob Nickerson of Sacramento City College.
At 157 pounds, top-seeded Wyatt Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS) earned a pair of pins in his first two matches and then defeated Josh McMillon of Fresno City College, 9-7 in the semifinals. In the championship match, Gerl dropped a 7-1 decision to Greg Gaxiola of Fresno State University. Sophomore Blake Vasquez (Fountain Valley HS) received a bye in his first match at 165 pounds and then recorded an 18-0 technical fall over Jeronimo Cardoso of West Hills College. Vasquez was then defeated, 13-5 by eventual champion Isaiah Hokit of Fresno State before rebounding for a pair of wins to earn third place. His next match was a 10-5 win over Jonathan Garcia of Simpson College and then posted another technical fall win over Cardoso, 18-2, in the third place match.
An injury ended the day for sophomore 149-pound Aaron Negrete (Calvary Chapel HS), who handily won his first two matches. He was hurt in a 9-5 loss to Khristian Olivas of Fresno State in the semifinals and was forced to injury default out of his next two matches and settled for sixth place. Freshman Josh Brown (Esperanza HS) finished in fourth place at 133 pounds, as did freshman 141-pound Nick Camacho (Paramount HS) and freshman 174-pound Zack Gonzalez (Lakewood HS).
