W. Track & Field: Cerritos wins seven events in season opener

Hosting their season opener on Saturday, the Cerritos College women's track and field team won seven events. Having the best day was sophomore thrower Tanya Reyes (Warren HS), who won four of the Falcons events. The team will take a week off before competing in the Pasadena City Opener on February 22.

Reyes, who qualified for the CCCAA State Championships in the shot put and the hammer as a freshman in 2018, spent last season as a red-shirt at Cal Poly Pomona. She posted a distance of 35' 6" to outdistance the field in the shot put, while freshmen Karina Escobar (Bell Gardens HS) and Natalie Espana (Bellflower HS) placed fifth and sixth, respectively. It was a distance of 156' 5" that won the hammer for Reyes, with Espana (99' 8") and Escobar (96' 2") a distant second and third place. In the discus, Reyes turned in a throw of 130' 3" to win the even, while Escobar was a close second place with a throw of 127' 1". The Falcons took the top three positions in the weight throw, with Reyes (46' 9") pulling away from freshman Angelina Escobar (Bell Gardens HS), who turned in a distance of 38' 11", with Karina Escobar in third place at 34' 9".

Other winners for Cerritos were sophomore Alona Davis (Bellflower HS), who won the 300-meters with a time of 41.41, with freshman teammate Charlotte Barrera (El Rancho HS) placing fourth with a clocking of 44.48. Sophomore Daila Bell (Carson HS) recorded a time of 10.66 to win the 60-yard hurdles. It was the quartet of Riyanna Jackson (Mayfair HS), Bell, Isis Johnson (Bellflower HS) and Tyshay Johnson that won the 400-meter relays in a time of 4:22.77.

Freshman Valeria Guerra (Warren HS) turned in a second place time in the 3000 meters with a time of 11:59.90, while her time of 6:06.84 earned her a third place finish in the mile. In the long jump, sophomore Justice Smith (Highland HS) cleared 17' 5 1/2" for a third place result.
