Now in his second season as a member of the coaching staff, Yoshita Funakoshi was a four-year wrestler at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo from 2015-18 after graduating from West Torrance High.

Funakoshi has spent time as an assistant coach at West Torrance High, as well as the Valdez Wrestling Club and is also a UFC Gym kids club coach.

While at Cal Poly, Funakoshi compiled a career 23-46 record in dual meet matches, which included placing sixth  in the Roadrunner Open and Pac-12 Championships at 133 pounds his junior season. As a freshman, he qualified for the Pac-12 Championships at 125 pounds and finished in fourth place at the Roadrunner Open. Was a four-year starter at Cal Poly.

At West Torrance High, he placed third at the State Championships at 120 pounds and was fifth in the Junior FILAs his senior season. He concluded the year with a 54-7 record and was the runner-up at the Masters Meet after winning the CIF and Bay League championships. He won the league championship all four years and finished with a career record of 159-40, which set the school record for most wins.

Funakoshi also coached his younger sister Jewelysa last season, while his brother Yoshiya is a sophomore on the Cal Baptist University wrestling team. Last season, Jewelysa placed third at 123 pounds and is now wrestling at Emmanuel (GA) University.

Funakoshi, 27, earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 2019. He is single and resides in Torrance.
