Winning four of the 10 weight classifications at the Leader of the Pack Tournament at East Los Angeles College enabled the Cerritos College wrestling team to win the championship on Saturday. The Falcons finished with 191 team points and held off the host Huskies, who had 171 team points. The event was the final one of the season for the Falcons before the 3C2A State Championships, which will take place on April 20 at Sacramento City College.

Earning individual championships on the day were sophomore 109-pound Lucy Guadarrama (Orange HS), sophomore 148-pound Natalie Resendiz (El Toro HS), freshman 160-pound Vida Beckel (Cypress HS) and sophomore 180-pound Nile Jernigan (Corona HS). Cerritos also had two others place second and two come in third place.

Guadarrama recorded wins by a pin in all three of her matches, which opened with a win in 1:40 over Millie Jimenez of East Los Angeles. That was followed by a pin over Amber Charleton of Bakersfield College in :24 seconds, with the day ending on a pin over Stephanie Zamora of East LA in 1:12. Resendiz also defeated all three of her opponents by way of a pin, including a victory over teammate Natalie Flores (Downey HS) in the finals in 2:46, who came in second place. She also pinned Tabitha Mariscal of East LA in 1:00 and Amanda Farias of Bakersfield in 2:33. Flores need to pull out a tight 11-10 win in the semifinals over teammate Karen Sanchez (Warren HS) to reach the finals. Flores led, 9-2 after two periods, which included a three-point nearfall. She absorbed three stalling penalty points and a takedown with :42 seconds left, but pulled out the win on a reversal six seconds later.

Vida Beckel was named the Upper Weight MVP At 160 pounds, Beckel (pictured, left), who was named the tournament's Upper Weight MVP, pinned both of her opponents on the way to the title. After a first round bye, Beckel pinned Valentina Robles of Santa Ana College in 2:04 and then won the title when she pinned Galilea Garcia of East LA in 2:08. Jernigan remained undefeated on the season after winning all three of her matches by pins in the first period. After needed 1:42 to finish off Hayley Huynh of Mt. San Antonio, she pinned Jennifer Contreras of East LA in 2:52. The championship was secured when she pinned Giselle Barrera of Santa Ana in 1:11.

Also placing in the top three on the day were Ahome Sordo (Paramount HS) in second place and Jessica Hong (Western HS) in third place at 102 pounds, while 116-pound Satira Sohal (Cypress HS) advanced to the finals, but settled for second place. Denise Figueroa (Mayfair HS) came in third place at 123 pounds and won her final two matches after opening with a loss.
