Football: Eleven players earn all-conference honors

In a season where the Cerritos College football team finished with an 8-3 record and posted a win in the Golden State Bowl, the team had 11 players receive National Division Northern Conference accolades. Leading the group was sophomore defensive end Alex Jones (Maple Heights, OH HS/Eastern Michigan University), who was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year. He was one of six players who earned 1st Team honors, while five others received 2nd Team recognition.

Joining Jones on the 1st Team were freshman defensive tackle David Fangupo (Kealakehe HS, HI), sophomore linebacker Aaron Porter (La Habra HS/UCLA), sophomore wide receiver Domonique Young (Dominguez HS), sophomore tight end Ainslie Johnson (Servite HS) and sophomore offensive guard Isheiko Mclaine (Norwalk HS). Those receiving 2nd Team honors included sophomore linebacker Erick Zarate (Long Beach Jordan HS), sophomore cornerback Jerry Smith (Mayfair HS), sophomore free safety Davey Monette (Dominguez HS), sophomore wide receiver Justin Caines (La Habra HS) and freshman offensive tackle Junior Millan (St. Paul HS).

Jones led all defensive linemen on the year with 48 tackles, while he also led the team with 13 1/2 tackles for loss, nine quarterback sacks and six quarterback hurries. He had eight tackles and three tackles for loss in the team's bowl win over Santa Barbara City College. As for Porter, he finished with a team-high 75 tackles, despite missing 1 1/2 games with an injury and was named the MVP of the bowl game. He also had 8 1/2 tackles for loss and 3 1/2 sacks for the Falcons. Fangupo helped plug up the middle on the defensive line and finished with 33 tackles, including a team-high three blocked kicks and had two sacks.

Young set new school records with 53 receptions for 939 yards and also added nine touchdown receptions. He had five games with over 100 receiving yards, including a season-high 182 yards on 10 receptions against El Camino College. He was poised to become the first 1,000-yard receiver in school history, but only had 30 receiving yards in the last two games. Johnson pulled in 17 passes for 210 yards and one touchdown, but was an excellent blocker. He, along with Mclaine and Millan helped Cerritos average 30 points and almost 400 yards a game.

Caines finished second on the team with 30 catches for 478 yards and nine touchowns, including two in the bowl game to earn the Offensive Player of the Game award. Zarate was second on the team with 79 tackles, including 32 solo stops and led the team with 11 1/2 tackles for loss. He was also second with 5 1/2 sacks and five quarterback hurries and also intercepted two passes. Smith missed parts of several games with an injury, but compiled 21 tackles and was second on the team with three interceptions and broke up four passes. Monette was fourth on the team with 50 tackles and picked off a pair of passes. He also broke up six passes and even had a tackle for loss.
