From 2001-03 Malcohm Heron was a forward on the Cerritos College men's basketball team. On May 12, 2018, he became Dr. Malcohm Heron, after earning his Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from USC. His dissertation was focused on the Preparation, Recruitment and Retention of California Superintendents.

In his freshman season with the Falcons, Heron appeared in 34 games and averaged 4.5 points and 2.6 rebounds, as the Falcons won the South Coast Conference championship and advanced to the State Tournament, where they were defeated, 68-64 by Skyline College in the quarterfinals. They repeated as conference champions his sophomore season, but lost in the second round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs. As a sophomore, Heron played in 24 games and made 18 starts, while he averaged 8.8 points and 5.9 rebounds and scored in double-figures in seven of the team's final nine games. He was named 1st Team all-conference that year.

Heron then transferred to San Jose Christian College (now William Jessup University), where he played for one season before moving on to York (NY) College for his senior season. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Education with an emphasis in Special Eduction and then went on to Azusa Pacific University and obtained his Masters degree in Educational Counseling in 2014.

Currently the Child Welfare & Attendance Coordinator for the Bellflower Unified School District, Heron has also served as a Special Education teacher, academic advisor and basketball coach for eight years for the Redondo Unified School District.
