Cerritos College men's soccer sophomore Christian Carrillo (Katella HS) showed why he was named the South Coast Conference's Offensive Player of the Year last season. Carrillo scored a pair of goals for the Falcons, who posted a 3-1 South Coast Conference win over visiting Los Angeles Harbor College on Friday. The win was the second in a row for Cerritos (2-5-2, 2-0-0), who will host rival Mt. San Antonio College at 4:00 p.m. next Tuesday. Last season, the Falcons defeated the Mounties in the CCCAA State Championship game.

At the outset of the game, the Seahawks put themselves in good position, as they scored just 1:57 into the contest. On a crossing pass from outside the 18-yard box by David Baez, Kevin Messina was able to get position and scored past sophomore goalkeeper Jaime Sanchez (Aspire Pacific Academy HS).

The lead didn't last long, as Cerritos took advantage of the heavy winds blowing toward the Seahawk goal. Freshman Jason Orejel (Long Beach Wilson HS) sent a high pass to the other side of the field, where Carrillo was battling with two LA Harbor players. Carrillo controlled the ball on the second bounce and lifted a shot over the head of goalkeeper Brian Hernandez, who came out to try and play the ball. Less than four minutes into the game at it was all tied, 1-1.

Both teams had multiple chances to score, with each having a goal nullified due to an offside call. Carrillo had his goal in the 29th minute turned away, while Luis Jimenes of the Seahawks was disallowed a goal in the 73rd minute due to an offside call on a corner kick. Carrillo also saw his penalty kick saved by Hernandez in the 34th minute, and even when the rebound came his way, Hernandez stoned him once again.

But the Falcons finally broke the tie in the 79th minute when freshman Ricardo Colin (Jefferson HS) passed up on taking a shot once he entered the 18-yard box. Moving the ball toward the middle, he was able to successfully feed a pass to freshman Francisco Orozco (Los Angeles Jordan HS), who slipped a shot under Hernandez for the tie-breaker.

The Seahawks moved all of the players up to try and create more offense as the time ticked away. Sanchez came up with a couple of saves in the final minutes, while Cerritos was able to clear the ball out of danger to Carrillo, who made one move and scored into a wide open net past Hernandez, who was well out of the net. The goal came in extra time.
