The Cerritos College men's swimming team defeated five other schools to win the Golden West Invitational on Friday. The Falcons finished with 834 team points and pulled away from Saddleback College, who came in second place with 775 team points, while the host Rustlers had 716 points, good for third place. The team will now take two weeks off before they compete in the South Coast Conference Championships at Mt. San Antonio College. Prior to that, the team's divers will take part in the SCC Diving Championships, which will be held at El Camino College.
In winning the invitational championship, Cerritos had one individual champion, but their multiple entries earned them points in all of the events. Freshman Marlon Moreno (Colegio Virgen del Rosario, Venezuela HS) won the 200-yard backstroke by posting a time of 2:05.55, which edged the second place finisher by less than a second. Teammates Henry Rodriguez (Downey HS) and Fernando Lua (Gahr HS) came in third and fourth places, respectively.
Moreno also swam the first leg of the 400-yard medley relay team that placed third with a time of 4:02.04. He was joined by freshman Alan Pae (Kennedy HS), freshman Randy Baldwin (Buena Park HS) and sophomore Marcus Delgado (La Serna HS). It was Moreno who took third place in the 50-yard freestyle with his time of 23.21, while sophomore Jacob Ramsaur (La Serna HS) earned second place in the 200-yard butterfly with his time of 2:19.45.
