Wrestling: Five wrestlers win weight class at East LA

Five Cerritos College wrestlers won their respective weight classes at the East LA Brawl on Saturday in their final test before the Southern California Regional Tournament. The team will take the next two weeks to train for the SoCal Regional Tournament, which will take place on December 7 at East Los Angeles College.

In addition to the five first place finishes, five others came in second place, with three more taking third place. At 133 pounds, sophomore George Mariscal (Warren HS) won all five of his matches, which included an 8-5 decision over sophomore teammate Gabe Ballesteros (Mesa, AZ HS), who came in second place, and a 13-5 victory over freshman Samuel Holandez (Carson HS) in his opening match.

Freshman Eric Ambriz (Temescal Canyon HS) swept through his three matches at 141 pounds to come in first place and handed sophomore teammate Ryan Medina (Warren HS) an 8-1 decision. At 149 pounds, freshman Sebastian Merrelle (Long Beach Wilson HS) won three straight matches, which included a pin over sophomore teammate Antonio Gonzalez (Arlington HS) for his only loss of the day. It was a 3-0 day for freshman Maxwell Kumashiro (Los Alamitos HS) at 174 pounds for a first place finish, while he beat sophomore Timothy Garnica (North Torrance HS), 6-2, which dropped him to second place. At 184 pounds, sophomore Christian Milian (Norwalk HS) won five straight matches to take first place, as he pinned all of his opponents.

Also coming in second place for the Falcons were freshman Gary Howe (Los Alamitos HS) at 125 pounds and sophomore Brian Simmons (Hemet HS) and 157 pounds, with sophomore Eddie Rogers (Martin Luther King HS) and freshman Christian Sanders (Santiago HS) at 197 pounds.
