Wrestling: Falcons win four matches to take duals championship

In their first competition of the season, the Cerritos College wrestling team defeated all four opponents to win the Mt. San Antonio Duals on Saturday. The Falcons posted wins over Cuesta College (36-10), Rio Hondo College (36-11), Sierra College (45-0) and Rio Hondo College (46-3) to win their group. Palomar College won the other group. The team will now travel north to compete against Santa Rosa College on Friday at West Hills College before competing in the West Hills Tournament on Saturday.

Cerritos vs. Cuesta: The Falcons got their season underway by winning eight of the 10 matches, with four of the wins coming by pin. At 149 pounds, freshman Antonio McKee needed just 1:43 to finish off Marvin Apreza, while freshman Ruben Avila (Lake Elsinore HS) earned the team six points with a pin just :11 seconds into the match at 174 pounds against Amir Bakhshi. As for sophomore Max Kumashiro (Los Alamitos HS), he pinned Jeff Sanchez in 2:22, with sophomore Robert Chism (Downey HS) getting a pin in 3:40 over Brett Kimball. Also earning wins in the match were sophomores Gary Howe (Los Alamitos HS), a 7-0 winner at 125 pounds, Voris Meeks (Yucca Valley HS), who recorded a 12-10 overtime win at 157 pounds and Keanu Tom (Los Alamitos HS), a 7-2 victor at 165 pounds.

Cerritos vs. Rio Hondo: Two pins and an injury default helped the Falcons in their win over Rio Hondo. Sophomore Dustin Kirk (Elsinore HS) pinned Frank Valverde in 1:21, with freshman Elijah Wilson (Long Beach Poly HS) picking up a first period pin over James Aguilar in 1:51. McKee forced Daniel Romero at 149 pounds to forfeit due to an injury just :43 seconds into the match. Tom earned a 17-4 major decision over Nick Mercado at 174 pounds, with Howe (7-4; 125 pounds), Meeks (7-4, 157 pounds) and Kumashiro (12-4; 184 pounds) all posting wins.

Cerritos vs. Sierra: The Falcons easily handled Sierra, as they posted the rare shutout. Howe and Kirk started by recording shutouts in their match, while Cerritos received a forfeit at 141 pounds. Meeks (3:22) and Wilson (1:15) both won by pin, with McKee earned an 18-3 technical fall win at 149 pounds, with Avila (17-0) at 174 pounds and Chism (5-0) at 285 pounds also not allowing a point. The closest match was an 8-7 decision in overtime against Oscar Flores. It was the only loss on the day for the Wolverines, who came in second place in the group.

Cerritos vs. West Hills: The Falcons clinched the group championship with their victory over West Hills. Five wins by pinfall and three more by technical fall put any uncertainty to rest. Howe opened with a pin in 1:12 at 125 pounds, and Kirk needed only :45 seconds to finish off Jason Arredondo. McKee also won in less than a minute at 149 pounds, while Chism recorded the fastest pin in the match, taking just :32 seconds to defeat Kyle Mask. Kumashiro finished off Blake Vargas-Marple in 1:45. Those earning majority decisions included freshman Kevin James (Redondo Union HS), who beat Devan Smith, 15-1 at 157 pounds, while Tom handed Gerardo Maldonado a 16-6 setback at 165 pounds. At 197 pounds, Wilson posted a 17-2 win over Trevor Kircher.
