Wrestling: Cerritos wins four weight championships at open

Hosting the Cerritos Open on Saturday, the wrestling team won four weight classes in the non-scoring meet. The Falcons, ranked #1 in the state, will travel to Palomar College on Wednesday night for a 7:00 p.m. Southwest Conference match.

Winning their weight classifications for the Falcons were freshman Kevin James (Redondo HS) at 157 pounds, sophomore Dylan Clarke (Burnt Hills, NY HS) at 174 pounds, 184-pound sophomore Max Kumashiro (Los Alamitos HS) and 197-pound sophomore Jeremiah Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS). Seven others advanced to the championship match, with three of those being teammates squaring off against each other.

At 157 pounds, James defeated a pair of unattached wrestlers, including Vitaliy Kochiev in the finals when he was forced to default due to an injury. In between those two wins, James handed Tyler Benavides of UCLA a 10-6 decision. As for Clark, he pinned Isaiah Escobedo of UCLA in :57 seconds and then escaped with a 5-4 win over Hector Vargas to reach the finals. In the championship match, he pinned teammate Joshua Allen (San Pedro HS). Kumashiro had the most dominant tournament of the day, winning 14-5 in his opening match over Rio Hondo's Anthony Martinez. He followed that with a pin over Daniel Torres in 5:25 and then recorded a 23-8 technical fall against teammate Elijah Wilson (Long Beach Poly HS) in the finals. Gerl also beat a teammate in the championships at 197 pounds, as he recorded a 1-0 win over freshman Oscar Martinez (Corona Centennial HS). He opened with a 20-5 technical fall and then received a forfeit win against teammate Andrew Salazar to reach the finals.

Freshman Jesse Mastron (Calvary Chapel HS) pinned both of his opponents at 141 pounds, but was defeated, 8-1 in the finals by Daniel Romero of Rio Hondo. At 149 pounds, sophomore Eric Ambriz (Temescal Canyon HS) picked up a 15-7 win and then defeated Justin Metzger, 16-10 to reach the finals. He was shut out, 3-0 by Nick Cegleski of USC in the championship match. Freshman 285-pound Jesse Gomez (Buena Park HS), ranked #3 in the state. earned a couple of big wins to reach the finals, but was defeated, 4-2 in the finals by #2-ranked Javier Gonzalez of Rio Hondo.
