W. Tennis: Both singles players and two doubles advance

On the first day of the CCCAA State Championships, the Cerritos College women's tennis team advanced both of their singles players and two of their doubles teams. On Friday, all of them will compete in Round of 32 matches in hopes of moving on to the third day of the four-day competition in an around the city of Ojai.

Round of 128 Singles - The Falcons had both of their entries, sophomore Taylor Heath (Cerritos HS) and Anastasia Khomyachenko (Sochi, Russia) earn byes in the opening round.

Round of 64 Singles - Heath, who's seeded #4, opened her day with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Aly Honore of Reedley College and will take on #13-seeded Polina Gorshenina of De Anza College in the Round of 32. Gorshenina, a childhood friend of Khomyachenko in Russia, faced each other on Wednesday in the CCCAA State Dual Team Championships, which was won by Cerritos. As for Khomyachenko's match, the #11-seed recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win to eliminate Vivian Dao of San Francisco City College. Her 8:00 a.m. match on Friday will be against #6-seeded Maria Ochoa of Fresno City College.

Round of 128 Doubles - Two of the three teams received a bye in the opening round, but the pair of freshmen Tiffany Sanchez (Long Beach Wilson HS) and Valentina Polonyi (Altisa, Hungary) opened with a solid 6-1, 6-1 win over Sophie Faspour and Izabella Haugen of De Anza College. The Falcon duo defeated Faspour and Lina Nguyen, 8-3 in the state dual meet championship match. Their season came to an end in the next round when they were defeated, 0-6, 0-6 by #3-seeded Mari Ochoa and Milah Ryland of Fresno City College. Heath and Khomyachenko are seeded #7 and after a first round bye, they earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Savannah Bickle and Tyler Bunderson of Santa Barbara City College. The two will now take on #8-seeded Raquel Gonzales and Harley Pena of Fresno City. The team's third doubles pair of freshmen Jovana Milosevic (High School of Business and Law, Serbia/Hillsborough, FL CC) and Danielle Pastor (Bishop Montgomery HS) upset #13-seeded Dao and Emma Stoep of San Francisco City. They will take on another seeded team. #3-seeded Daniello Garrido and Lauren Smith of San Diego Mesa College.
