W. Tennis: Top doubles team advances to quarterfinals

Heading into the second day of the CCCAA State Championships, the Cerritos College women's tennis team had a pair of singles players and one doubles pair competing. They all opened the day with wins in the Round of 32, but only the Falcons top doubles team made it through the day unscathed..

In singles play, freshman Petra Such (Gyula Illyés, Hungary), seeded #4, recorded a 6-3, 6-0 win over unseeded JoAnn Taylor of Orange Coast College in her morning match. Squaring off against #15-seeded Srna Lepchevska of Santa Monica College, Such won the first set, but dropped the next two and was eliminated 6-2, 0-6, 2-6. Lepchevska and the Corsairs also defeated the Falcons in the Southern California Regional Team Playoffs.

The Falcons other singles player, freshman Diviana Bravo (Unidad Educativa Rosa de Jesús Cordero, Ecuador) advanced to the Round of 16 with a 6-0, 6-3 win over unseeded Tyler Bunderson in her morning match. But, the #7-seed was defeated in straight sets by #2-seeded Diana Barcelata of Canada College, 4-6, 2-6.

Such and Bravo were the final doubles team remaining for Cerritos and earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over unseeded Tiana Cung and Alyanna Louise Soriano of Cypress College. The Falcon duo suffered a 9-7 doubles loss against the same pair in a team duals match earlier in the season. In the Round of 16, the #5-seeded Such and Bravo earned a spot in the quarterfinals with their 6-4, 6-4 win over #3-seeded Miriam Lopez and Mimi Nguyen of DeAnza College. They're opponent at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday is #2-seeded Veronika Galastyan and Tsukimi Oho of Glendale College.
