Heading into their South Coast Conference match against host Mt. San Antonio College on Wednesday night, the Cerritos College volleyball team held a one-game lead for second place. A four-game loss to the Mounties, 25-20, 22-25, 18-25, 19-25, puts the two teams in a tie for second place with four matches remaining. The team will host East Los Angeles College at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, and have three of their final four games at home.

Cerritos (10-8, 7-3), who beat Mt. SAC in their first meeting, won the opening set and had a chance to take a commanding lead. But they were unable to win that second set and then struggled after that, while the Mounties continued to pick up momentum as the match progressed.

Looking to sophomore Jasmynne Roberts (Long Beach Poly HS) for their attack at the net, she posted 11 kills in 68 attempts, but only had one kill in 22 attacks in the important second set. Sophomore Lisa Villarroel (Long Beach Millikan HS/Long Beach City College) added seven kills and six block assists, and was joined by sophomore Jasmin Mitchell (Warren HS), who also had six block assists and recorded four kills.

Freshman Jasmine Peralta (Lakewood HS) led the back row with 13 digs, while Roberts had 11 and sophomore Sara Hickman (La Mirada HS) finished with eight digs and four kills. Sophomore setter Michelle Barba (Downey HS) and freshman Natalie Caravantes (Montebello HS) combined for 26 assists and five kills.
