W. Water Polo: Team pulls out overtime win at tournament

While at the San Diego Mesa Tournament over the weekend, the Cerritos College women's water polo team pulled out an overtime win against Citrus. The victory by the Falcons was their lone triumph, as they dropped their other three contests. On Friday, they were defeated by Grossmont (15-4) and Palomar (14-8), while they came back the second day for their win over Citrus (14-12) and finished with a 13-9 setback against the host Olympians. Cerritos (4-11) will resume South Coast Conference play on Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m. game at Long Beach City College.

Cerritos vs. Grossmont: The duo of sophomores Ashley Padilla (California HS) and Celeste Ibarra (Gahr HS) accounted for all of the goals, as the Falcons fell behind 7-0 after the first period. The team's leading scorer, sophomore Carla Harvey (Potomac Falls, VA HS) went 0-for-12 in shot attempts, but did tie for the team lead with two steals.

Cerritos vs. Palomar: After staying close for the first half, the Falcons were outscored 6-1 in the third period to turn a 6-4 deficit into a 12-5 score. Ibarra and Harvey scored three times in the loss, while freshman Breanna Zuniga (California HS) led the way with four steals. Padilla and freshman Amanda Rabb (Gahr HS) each contributed three steals, while freshman goalie Kristin Park (Cerritos HS) made seven saves.

Cerritos vs. Citrus: The Falcons fought back from trailing 4-1 after the first period and outscored the Owls, 6-4 in the second half to extend the game. They led 11-10 at the end of the first overtime period and then went on to post a 14-12 win. Park made nine saves for Cerritos in the win, with Harvey scoring four times and making four steals. Padilla found the back of the net three times, while the trio of Zuniga, Ibarra and Rabb each scored twice.

Cerritos vs. San Diego Mesa: In their final game of the tournament, the team was leading 9-8 heading into the final period, but were shut out the rest of the way and allowed five goals. As a team, the Falcons were just 9-for-32 in their shot attempts, with Harvey scoring three times and adding three steals. Zuniga led the defense with four steals, while Padilla and Ibarra each scored twice. Park made seven saves in the loss.
