Football: Numbers continue to climb for Cerritos

With more and more Cerritos College football players earning their Associate of Arts degrees, the numbers of players who are committing to four-year schools will continue to climb. The latest to make their decision is outside linebacker/strong safety Angel Garcia (St. Paul HS), who will be playing at Tennessee Tech University next season. Also committing to a school at the next level is cornerback Jhamell "Deuce" Blenman II (St. Bernard HS), who has committed to the University of Idaho.

Deuce Blenman committed to the University of Idaho Garcia registered 37 tackles on the year in his sophomore season, along with 2 1/2 tackles for loss, a fumble recover, pass breakup and an interception. He turned in a season-high 11 tackles against El Camino College and added five stops against Mt. San Antonio College and four tackles and a half tackle for loss in the bowl win over Long Beach City College. In his freshman year, Garcia recorded 30 tackles, which included a season-high against Mt. SAC. He also had an interception and pass break-up against Pasadena City College.

He will be joining a Tennessee Tech team that went 4-7 last year and will be part of the newly configured Ohio Valley Conference starting in 2023.

As for Blenman, he checked in with 38 tackles and finished second on the team with nine pass break-ups. He also picked off one pass and blocked a kick. He turned in a season-high seven tackles in the season-opener against Pasadena City College and also had six tackles against both East Los Angeles College and Riverside City College. Blenman broke up a season-high three passes against Riverside City and blocked a punt against Allan Hancock College. He also returned five kickoffs for 99 yards.

Last season, the Vandals went 7-5 and qualified for the Football Championship Series (FCS) Playoffs, where they were defeated by Southeastern Louisiana University, 45-42.

The Falcons now have 12 players who have made their decisions for next season.
