With the addition of Tyron Bates, Chase Nixon and AJ Hernandez to the list of Cerritos College football signings, the team has now seen 15 players move on to the four-year level, with 12 of them Division I schools. Bates, who made the most of his 16 catches on the year, signed with Eastern Michigan University, while Nixon inked with one of the top FSC schools in the country, North Dakota State University. As for Hernandez, he will be playing at New Mexico Highlands University.
In his 16 receptions, Bates went in for a touchdown four times and amassed 619 yards for an amazing 38.7 yards per catch. He also missed the final two games of the season with an injury. His four touchdowns went for 42, 69, 72 and 92 yards, with the latter his only reception against Palomar College. An amazing skill of getting open, Bates was the team's big play threat and came through whenever the team needed an offensive spark. Although he only caught one pass in five of the games during the year, he averaged 58.6 yards per catch in those games.
Bates will be joining an Eagles team that went 9-4 in 2022 and posted a 41-27 win over San Jose State University in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
As for Nixon (pictured, left), he appeared in all 11 games for the Falcons in 2022 and recorded 25 solo tackles to go along with 17 assisted stops for 42 on the year, which was the third most among secondary players. He also broke up seven passes, picked off another pass and was one of only two players on the team to register both a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Nixon recorded a season-high seven tackles in the Western State Bowl win over Long Beach City College, while he had six against Allan Hancock College and five in a pair of contests.
The Bison are coming off a 12-3 season where they reached the NCAA Division I Football Championship Game against South Dakota State and dropped a 45-21 decision. The Jackrabbits handed North Dakota State two of their three losses on the year. They won the national championship in 2021.
Hernandez will be joining teammate Diego Barrera at New Mexico Highlands University after playing in seven games and turned on one tackle while playing mainly on special teams. His biggest play of the year came against Southwestern College when he stepped in front of a pass and turned his interception into a 30-yard touchdown. He recorded his lone tackle of the season in that game.
