A day after recording 15 hits in a win over Pasadena City College, the Cerritos College softball team was limited to a combined eight hits in a doubleheader loss to College of the Canyons on Friday. The Falcons (7-9) dropped the first game, 3-2 and were then defeated 14-0 in five innings in the second game. The 14-0 loss was the worst since a loss by the same scored in 2018 against Palomar College. The team is scheduled to travel to East Los Angeles on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. South Coast Conference game on Tuesday, weather permitting.
College of the Canyons 3, Cerritos 2: The Falcons took a 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third inning and were on their way to a potential shutout. However, the Cougars put three runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out the win. In the third inning, sophomore outfielder Itzel Soto (Long Beach Millikan HS) led off with a single, while sophomore outfielder Haley Davis (Mayfair HS) followed with a double. On the play, Cougars centerfielder Ashlynn Heck threw the ball away, which allowed Soto to score, while a second error on the play allowed Davis to come around and score. Sophomore pitcher Skyler Swearingen (Mayfair HS) limited College of the Canyons to just four hits through the first five innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth inning. A pair of singles and an RBI double brought freshman pitcher Chasity Martinez (South El Monte HS) into the game. After recording the first out of the inning, Rebecca Rodarte doubled in both runners, which turned out to be the winning runs. Soto, Davis and sophomore third baseman Kayla Aros (Torrance HS) all had a pair of hits, while sophomore first baseman Brianna Spoolstra (Mayfair HS), freshman catcher Dominique Jimenez (El Rancho HS) and freshman shortstop Ariana Gambala (High Tech Media Arts HS) all drew two walks.
College of the Canyons 14, Cerritos 0 (5 innings): The second game started bad and got worse for the Falcons. Limited to just one hit in the five innings, the Cerritos pitching struggled and the team trailed, 10-0 after two innings. Martinez suffered the loss in the cirdle, while sophomore Annjelica Moreno-Englebrecht (Oceanside HS/Iowa Lakes CC) saw her first pitching action of the season. The Falcons collected their lone hit of the game in the fourth inning when sophomore Alyanna Hernandez (Cerritos HS) singled with one out, while Soto advanced to second base after drawing a walk. Three consecutive walks to start the fifth inning to freshman Aliya Velasquez (Northview HS), sophomore Sophia Collazo (Paramount HS) and freshman Kara Spoolstra (Mayfair HS) loaded the bases. But the top of the batting order could not come through and the game was ended due to the eight-run mercy rule.
