Sophomore Tyree Cox (Lancaster HS) won all four of his matches at 174 pounds on Saturday to capture the championship of the Lassen Tournament, which was held in Reno, NV. The Cerritos College wrestling team had another wrestler reach the finals, but came up short, while one of their entries placed fourth. The Falcons will resume Southwest Conference action on Thursday when they host Rio Hondo College at 7:00 p.m. at Excelsior High.
Joining Cox in the championships was freshman Tyler Smith (Marina HS), who was defeated in the 197-pound championships, while Sophomore Dylan Clarke (Burnt Hills, NY HS) won four of his six matches to come in fourth place.
After winning the tournament, Cox moved up to fifth in the state at 174 pounds, while Smith is ranked #4 in the state at 197 pounds. As for Clarke, he's considered an honorable mention selection with two others ranked in the state. Sophomore Rudy Delgado (North Torrance HS), who did not compete in the tournament, is ranked #7 in the state at 133 pounds, while freshman Michael Behnke (Arlington HS) is ranked #8 at 141 pounds.
