In the first session of the CCCAA State Championships, the Cerritos College wrestling team went 6-0 in their matches at West Valley College on Friday. However, the second session was unkind to the Falcons, who went 1-7 with one wrestler still in the hunt for a championship. Of the seven who lost in their quarterfinals, five of them won to stay alive in the consolation rounds. Cerritos sits in seventh place after the first day with 39.5 team points, with the second day set to begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Sophomore Rudy Delgado (North Torrance HS), who opened with a pin over Dominic Cesena of Chabot College followed that with a pin in 2:43 over Sierra College's Travis Roberts. Delgado will now take on Southern California champion Juan Jaime of Santa Ana College in the semi-finals.
Those still alive in the consolation rounds include 125-pound freshman Gabe Ballesteros (Mesa, AZ HS), who was defeated, 5-2 by top-seeded Silverio Esparza of West Hills College, but fought back for a 9-7 victory against Hugo Perez of East Los Angeles College. He will take on Cuesta College's Matthew Correa and is two wins away from coming in third place. At 141 pounds, freshman Michael Behnke (Arlington HS) rebounded from a 12-6 loss to Anthony Rubio of Chabot College to defeat Ishi Silva of Santa Rosa Junior College. He will now face Mt. San Antonio's Steven Melara of Mt. San Antonio College.
Sophomore Tyree Cox (Lancaster HS) was defeated at 174 pounds by Fresno City College's Kevin Corbett, 6-5 after a first round bye, but responded with a 5-2 decision against Roman Ermolov of Skyline College. He will now square off against Tyler Brown of Sacramento City College to start the day, while 197-pound freshman Tyler Smith (Marina HS) was shutout, 4-0 by Modesto College's Ryan Mackey before a 10-6 win over Victor Cisneros of East Los Angeles College kept him in the tournament. Smith will take on Derek Jaurigue of Cuesta College in his next consolation match. At 285 pounds, sophomore Weston Hawkins (Edison HS/North Iowa Area CC) suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Mike Branson of Shasta College and then eliminated Narcisco Juarez of Fresno City College with a 4-1 win.
