The Cerritos women's track and field team won their ninth state championship

For the ninth time in school history, and eighth time in the last 14 seasons, the Cerritos College women's track and field team has won the CCCAA State Championship. Over the weekend at a rainy San Mateo College, the Falcons compiled 111 team points to easily outdistance themselves from second place Riverside City College, who ended with 82.5 team points. Cerritos had their three-year state title streak snapped in 2018 when they finished in second place and responded this year by winning their ninth state title.

Helping the Falcons to the championship were a quartet of first place finishes, along with three second places. Earning second place finishes in both the 100 meters (11.91) and 200 meters (25.10), sophomore Kierra King (Long Beach Wilson HS) also ran the second leg of the 4x100-meter relay team that picked up a state title. Freshman Kenyla Miles (Carson HS) ran the first leg, followed by King and then freshmen Mahlaya Salter (Diamond Ranch HS) and Alona Davis (Bellflower HS), with the foursome turning in a time of 46.63, which was over a full second ahead of second place West Los Angeles College. Miles was right behind King in the 100 meters (11.94), while the two made up half of the third place 4x400-meter relay team that also included freshman Alia Scott (Vista HS) and sophomore Glenn Nance (Gardena HS).

Sophomore Imani Jones (Mater Dei HS) posted a state championship distance of 5.86 meters in the long jump, with King taking fifth place, while freshman Justice Smith (Highland HS) and Jones took the top to finishes in the triple jump. Smith won the event at 12.30 meters, with Jones right behind at 12.01 meters.

In five of the 11 events in which the Falcons recorded team points, they earned 10 or more collective points. West LA, who finished in third place, recorded double-digit team points in four separate events, but didn't earn any points in field events. Cerritos garnered 43 of their points in field events.
