It's been 15 seasons and 30 matches, but the Cerritos College volleyball team finally came out on top against El Camino College. The Falcons (13-10, 9-8) were taking on the Warriors in the first round of the South Coast Conference Tournament on Friday and after trailing two sets to one, came back to post a 22-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-22, 15-13 win, which snaps a 29-match losing streak to El Camino dating back to 2006. It doesn't get any easier for the Falcons, who must now take on regular season conference champion Pasadena City College at 11:00 a.m. in the tournament semifinals.

Since 2006, and prior to the start of this season, the Falcons had only taken four games against the Warriors, while El Camino had won 81 games. In their two meetings this season, Cerritos led two sets to one, but could not come up with the win and lost in five sets... until this match.

In the fifth and deciding set, El Camino opened up a 5-1 lead until the Falcons recorded six of the next seven points to take a 7-6 lead, thanks in part to consecutive kills from freshman Maleah Gonzales (Schurr HS). Freshman Marissa Mendibles (Downey HS), who didn't enter the match until the fifth set, also added a kill during that run. She came in after freshman Madison Borja (La Mirada HS) went down with an injury, one that will keep her out the remainder of the season. At the time of her injury, Borja had 18 kills and 21 digs, which gave her 38 kills over the last two matches.

The Warriors went on to take a 9-8 advantge and it looked like the Falcons might come up on the short end in a fifth set for the third time. But two kills from freshman Jayda Harris-Amete (La Mirada HS), along with one from freshman Aiyana Sierra (La Mirada HS) and a service ace from Gonzalez changed the course of the match. The Warriors, trailing 14-10, scored the next three points until Harris-Amete slammed home her team-high 19th kills to secure the victory.

Along with her 19 kills, Harris-Amete added 17 digs, while freshman libero Breanna Lizarraga (Paramount HS) turned in a team-high 22 digs. Freshman setter Carissa Mendibles (Downey HS) showed why she's one of the best setters in the conference, as she distributed a season-high 55 assists, while Gonzales turned in 10 kills. The Falcons also received a combined 15 kills from Sierra and freshman Ava Villaflores (La Mirada HS) in their streak-snapping win.
