On Wednesday, the Cerritos College women's water polo team scored a season-high in goals in their 22-7 South Coast Conference win at Mt. San Antonio College. The win by the Falcons (14-3, 6-0) was their ninth in a row and was highlighted by sophomore Amy Cervantes (Montebello HS/East Los Angeles College) setting a single-game school record with 10 assists. The team will now compete in the Battle at the Beach Tournament, which will be held at three locations this weekend. Cerritos will play their first two games at home on Friday, starting with a 9:10 a.m. game against Ventura College.
In the win over the Mounties (7-7, 4-2), it was a close 5-3 game in the second period until freshman Gabby Arenas (Montebello HS) scored the next two goals before halftime. The Falcons scored three power play goals in the first period and opened the second half in the same manner, as three of their first four goals in the third period were on a man advantage. Cervantes, who moved into second place in the state with 61 assists after her performance, assisted on all four goals to start the third period, which were scored by four different players. She is also closing in on the single-season school record of 83 assists, set by Lizbeth Gomez last season.
Cerritos continued to add to their lead and scored five of the next six goals in a nine-goal third period, which pushed their lead to 16-5 with eight minutes left on the clock. The Falcons also dominated the fourth period by outscoring the Mounties, 6-2.
Freshman Mia Carbajal (Schurr HS) led all scorers with seven goals, while also adding a team-high five steals and drew five ejections. As a team, Cerritos converted 8-of-9 power plays, which assisted in their win. Arenas converted six of her seven shots into goals, with sophomore Mayra Olivas (Montebello HS) playing a great all-around game. By the final buzzer, she had recorded four goals, three assists, five steals and three ejections drawn. As a team, the Falcons had 25 steals against Mt. SAC.
