W. Water Polo: Season awards handed out to Falcons

After a season where the Cerritos College women's water polo team won 20 games, finished second in the South Coast Conference and won a Southern California Regional Playoff game, several of the players were awarded with postseason accolades.

Freshman Mia Carbajal (Schurr HS), who led the team in goals (96), steals (71) and ejections drawn (70), became the 10th All-American selection under head coach Sergio Macias, while she was also a 1st Team All-Southern California and 1st Team All-South Coast Conference pick. The duo of sophomores Amy Cervantes (Montebello HS/East Los Angeles College) and Mayra Olivas (Montebello HS) received 2nd Team All-Southern California and 1st Team all-conference accolades for their performance this season. Cervantes led the state with a school record 112 assists this season and also produced 54 goals. As for Olivas, who was an All-American selection as a freshman, she led the team with 74 steals to go along with 47 goals and 38 assists. Olivas also finishes her career with a school record in career assists (179), while her 105 steals as a freshman set a school record and led the state. Both Olivas and Cervantes are two-time 1st Team all-conference selections.

Those earning 2nd Team all-conference honors include sophomores Carolina Medrano (Schurr HS) and Marisela Olivas (Schurr HS), with freshmen April Nuno (Cerritos HS) and Gabby Arenas (Montebello HS) being Honorable Mention selections. Medrano was one of the team leaders in goals (45), assists (34) and steals (40), while her assist total was the 15th most in a season in school history, while Nuno recorded 170 saves in goal this year, which is the ninth most in a season in school history. Medrano was a two-time 2nd Team all-conference pick.
