At the Citrus Tournament on Friday, the Cerritos College women's water polo team recorded both South Coast Conference and non-conference wins. The Falcons (12-3, 4-1) opened the morning with a 22-3 win over East Los Angeles College in a game that counted against their conference record and then came right back for an 18-7 win over Saddleback College. The team will host Mt. San Antonio College at 3:00 p.m. next Wednesday in a conference match as part of another busy week.
Cerritos vs. East Los Angeles: The comfortable win by the Falcons allowed several players to recorded season-best standards in goals scored. In addition to breaking the 20-goal barrier for the second time in their last four games, Cerritos scored the first five goals of the game, with freshman Miranda Alvarez (Schurr HS) accounting for the first three. It was an 8-1 lead after the first period and a 12-1 advantage at intermission. Freshmen Jillian Crockett (Cerritos HS) and Isabella Berdote (Cerritos HS) both scored twice in the first half, with freshman Janelly Durazo (Downey HS) posting a pair of third period goals. The fourth period was reserved for sophomore Gabriella Arenas (Montebello HS) and freshman Samantha Wisher (La Serna HS), who each found the back of the net twice. By the final whistle, Arena and Wisher had a team-high four goals each, with Alvarez scoring three times, while Crockett scored three goals and assisted on three others. Sophomore Karina Oliveros (Downey HS) led the way with five assists, with Crockett, Durazo and Kaya Glynn (Cerritos HS) all dishing out a trio of assists. Sophomore Haili Snook (Downey HS), who played both games, recorded seven saves against the Huskies.
Cerritos vs. Saddleback: After a slow start to their win over the Bobcats, the Falcons turned a 2-2 game into a 6-4 halftime lead, as Alvarez and freshman Angelina Romero (Schurr HS) each scored two second period goals. Coming out for the second half, Cerritos added eight more goals to their total, while the defense limited Saddleback to just two goals for a sizable 14-6 lead with just eight minutes of play remaining. Arenas helped maintain the lead with two fourth quarter goals. Returning All-American Mia Carbajal (Schurr HS) led the way with four goals and added a pair of assists, with Alvarez and Romero contributing three goals apiece. Freshman Keyla Santos (Schurr HS) played a solid all-around game, as she turned in two goals, three assists and four steals, with Snook earning her sixth win of the season after making four saves.
