In their first meet of the season, the Cerritos College women's cross country team traveled to Northern Arizona University for the George Kyte Classic on Saturday. The Falcons finished in fourth place out of the six college that fielded a full squad. The team will take the next week off before entering the Southern California Regional Invitational, which will take place at Chaffey College.
Competing over the 2.5 mile course, Evelyn Mejia (Norwalk HS) and Diana Raya Perez (Norwalk HS) were the first two Falcons to complete the race, as they crossed the finish line within six seconds of each other. Mejia was the 19th runner out of the 62 that raced and posted a time of 17:50.7, while Raya Perez took 20th place overall in a time of 17:56.0.
As a team, the Falcons finished together in small sets, with Jayla Barnwell (Warren HS) the third member of the team to finish and turned in a 25th place time of 18:22.3. The final two runners to complete the team scoring crossed at just about the same time, as Kimberly Ibarra (Warren HS) touched up in 19:07.1, good for 32nd place, with Ariel Alvarez (Firebaugh HS) next with a time of 19:07.6.
There were four more Cerritos runners that took on the course and included Lila Palmer (Long Beach Poly HS; 19:28.0; 35th place), Viviana Rodriguez (Santa Fe HS; 19:43.1, 37th place), Claudia Rios (Paramount HS; 20:00.1; 39th place) and Kaitlyn Macias (La Mirada HS; 21:19.7; 48th place).
