On the strength of their 7-2 win over visiting Mt. San Antonio College, the Cerritos College men's tennis team held on to first place in the South Coast Conference. The Falcons (10-2, 3-0) have now won nine matches in a row and will travel to San Diego Mesa (9-4) for a non-conference match at 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
Taking a day off from singles play, sophomore Nathan Eshmade (Kings Baptist, Australia HS) saw freshman Amadi Kagoma (Malezi School, Kenya HS) move into the top position and post a 6-2, 6-3 victory. The two still teamed up in doubles and posted an 8-2 win to remain undefeated (10-0), while both have yet to be defeated in singles action this season.
The absence of Eshmade moved everyone up the ladder in singles, with freshman Sheldon Hseih (Long Beach Poly HS) taking over the #2 position and recorded a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over Aaron Hayes. Freshman Nicholas Simonelli (Long Beach Wilson HS) registered a 6-4, 6-3 win in the #3 spot, while sophmore Edgar Munoz (Paramount HS) posted a 7-5, 6-2 win at #6. Freshman Milos Zoric (Gimnazjia Indijija, Serbia HS) won the first set, 6-2 and was up 2-0 in the second set against Adrian Peralta. But an injury slowed Zoric down, and after dropping the second set, 6-2, was forced to retire.
In doubles play, Simonelli and Hseih came away with an 8-1 win, with Munoz teaming with freshman David Evans (Long Beach Wilson HS) for an 8-5 victory.
