For the second year in a row, the Cerritos College men's tennis team has reached the 20-win plateau during the season. The Falcons (20-3, 7-0) also remained undefeated in South Coast Conference play with their 8-1 win over host El Camino College on Thursday. The team has one of their biggest matches of the season next Tuesday, as they host Ventura College at 2:00 p.m. in a rain make-up match. Cerritos is currently ranked #2 in Southern California, while the Pirates are ranked #3, so the winner would likely host a second round team playoff match in three weeks.
Resting almost all of the starting players after a previous week where the team played six matches in six days, the Falcons still won al three doubles matches to start the day and then picked up five straight set wins in singles play.
Playing his first singles match in the #1 position, sophomore Agustin Lombardi (E.S.D.S., Argentina) earned a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win, while freshman Eliot Dota (Paris, France) earned a 6-0, 6-2 win in his first time playing in the #2 spot in the ladder. Sophomore Mark Antoniuk (W. 124 School, Russia) continued the team's success with his 6-2, 6-1 win, while freshman Kyle Konishi (Mayfair HS) secured a 6-0, 6-0 win. Sophomore David Evans (Long Beach Wilson HS) earned the team their fifth singles with with his 6-4, 6-3 victory.
Taking a break from playing singles, but still earning a doubles win were freshman Aleks Trifunovic (Katrinelunds Gymnasium, Sweden) and James Zhang (Shenzhen Luohu Foreign Language School, China), who posted an 8-0 win, with Dota teaming with sophomore Edgar Munoz (Paramount HS) for an 8-1 win.
