M. Tennis: First day of State Championships nets two casualties

After the first day of the CCCAA State Championships, the Cerritos College men's tennis team still has five singles players and two doubles teams still competing. The Falcons saw one of their singles players and one doubles team get eliminated on the first day in Ojai and the surrounding areas where matches are taking place. The second day of singles gets underway at 8:00 a.m., with doubles getting underway at 1:00 p.m.

Round of 128 Singles - Cerritos had five of their six singles players receive a bye in the first round, as did all three doubles teams. The only one to compete in the Round of 128 was freshman singles player Eliot Dota (Paris, France), who recorded a 6-1, 7-5 win over Leo Santos of Ventura College.

Round of 64 - The bulk of the action took place in this round, as Cerritos has four of their singles players seeded in the top 16, as well as two of their doubles pairs. Seeded #3, freshman Oleksandr Krasnov (School 106, Ukraine) earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Dale Gutierrez of San Diego City College in his lone match of the day and will square off against #12-seeded Euan Rajanthiran of Foothill College in a Round of 32 match. Freshman Nikita Katsnelson (Odessa Gymnasium No. 1, Ukraine), the #7-seed handed Austin Lee of Bakersfield College a 6-1, 6-1 score, while he will take on unseeded Charlie Stephens of Imperial Valley College in his first match on Friday. Also seeded, sophomore Agustin Lombardi (E.S.D.S., Argentina) eliminated Andrew Schwartz of Bakersfield College, while the #11-seed will take on Santa Barbara City College's emerson Sekban, who upset #5-seeded Igor Pissarenko of Foothill College, 6-3, 6-2 in the Round of 64. Freshman Aleks Trifunovic (Katrinelunds Gymnasium, Sweden), the #15 seeded player, posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Nick Reilley of Modesto College and will start tomorrow with a match against #3-seeded Sean Alves of Folsom College. The Falcons only unseeded player, freshman James Zhang (Shenzhen Luohu Foreign Language School, China) upset #13-seeded Michael Lopez of Modesto College, 6-1, 6-0 and will face another seeded player, #6-seed Ron Kang of Mt. San Antonio College in his next match. Dota, who took on #2-seeded Cody Duang of American River College, saw his season come to an end with a 1-6, 5-7 loss.

Round of 64 Doubles - The pair of Krasnov and Katsnelson played well in their 6-0, 6-2 win over Trent Harris and Matthieu Tabanon of Riverside City College. Their 1:00 p.m. match on Friday will be against unseeded Michael Burr and Guenter Newman of Ventura College, with the winner advancing to the Round of 32. Seeded #5, Trifunovic and Zhang opened with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Brandon Herman and Nico Tessi of Mt. San Jacinto, while their next  match will be against #11-seeded Rajanthiran and Jacob Strabo of Foothill. The third doubles team of Lombardi and sophomore Mark Antoniuk (W. 124 School, Russia) were eliminated from the tournament with a 6-7, 6-0, 6-10 loss to #9-seeded Eric Lofquist and Sean Astin Miller of Diablo Valley College.
